How ScanWow Processes Your Documents
By default, ScanWow uses AI-powered cloud OCR (Magic Cloud) for the best text recognition accuracy. Your scans are sent securely to our servers for processing and are not stored—processing is real-time only. You can switch to fully on-device processing anytime in Settings.
Overview
ScanWow ("we," "our," or "us") is committed to transparency about how we handle your data. This Privacy Policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your choices.
Document Processing
Cloud OCR (Magic Cloud) — Default
When Magic Cloud is enabled (the default setting), your scanned document images are:
- Sent securely (HTTPS encrypted) to our processing servers
- Processed using Google's Gemini AI for text extraction
- Returned to your device with extracted text
- Not stored on our servers — processing is real-time only
We use a device identifier to manage usage limits. This identifier does not contain personal information.
On-Device Processing — Your Choice
You can disable Magic Cloud in Settings to use fully on-device OCR. When disabled, your documents never leave your device. All processing happens locally using Tesseract.js.
Information We Collect
When Using Cloud OCR (Magic Cloud)
- Document images — Sent for processing, not stored
- Device identifier — Anonymous ID for usage limits
- Usage count — Number of scans processed
When Using On-Device Processing
- Nothing — Your documents stay entirely on your device
For All Users
- Purchase information — Processed through Apple's App Store and RevenueCat for subscription management
- Crash reports — Anonymous crash data to improve stability
- Support requests — If you contact us, we collect your email and message
Third-Party Services
ScanWow uses the following third-party services:
- Google Gemini — AI-powered OCR processing (when Magic Cloud is enabled)
- RevenueCat — Purchase and subscription management
- Apple App Store — Payment processing
Data Retention
- Document images — Not retained. Processed in real-time and immediately discarded.
- Usage statistics — Retained for service operation (usage limits)
- Purchase records — Retained as required for business operations
Your Rights and Choices
- Switch to on-device processing — Disable Magic Cloud in Settings anytime
- Delete your data — Contact us to request deletion of any data we hold
- Access your data — Contact us to request a copy of data we hold about you
Data Security
All data transmission uses HTTPS encryption. Our servers are hosted on Cloudflare's secure infrastructure. Document images are processed in memory and not written to persistent storage.
Children's Privacy
ScanWow is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any material changes by updating the "Last updated" date.
